Congratulation Blackaddar, it sure wasn't without a battle!

Saturday 5 fantastic races with 8 knots of wind and tricky current, Sunday just had 1 race and lots of fun soaking up the good weather.

Thanks everyone for making this a great event, and a special thanks to the two teams that sailed the Club242's, we look forward to having you out for Summer Solstice!

August 30th - Sept 2nd      Fleet3 Sylvan Lake
With teams racing on the one design Martin 242, this is an event that you won’t want to miss. The M242 is a 24-foot, high performance, racer. Over 250 have been built since 1981, with large fleets on the Western Regions of Canada and the U.S. Like other popular one design classes, the M242 Class maintains very rigid class rules to control expense and ensure even competition. The total sail inventory consists of a main, jib and spinnaker. The roller-furling jib dramatically simplifies boat handling and encourages family crews. With a PHRF handicap of 150-156 seconds per mile, it seems that the PHRF handicappers certainly respect the performance ability of the M242.

It all starts with a meet & greet on Thursday night when teams will draw for their boat in a lottery.

Friday morning begins with a boardroom clinic. Our guest coach, Michael Clements (current M242 Canadian National Champion and Fleet Captain of the Royal Vancouver YC), with his vast knowledge of the M242 and his proven instructional abilities, the training clinic will be highly informative and beneficial to all crews. Then it’s down to the docks and onto the water for more coaching, and practice. The clinic will conclude with a practise race or two under the direction of our Multi-Olympic Race Officer, Paul Ulibarri (aka PU) and his equally talented race management team. Paul is no stranger to the waters of Sylvan Lake, as over the past four years he has actively supported our race management program as well as participating in our infamous year end regatta "The End of Summer Hummer". In the words of PU - fun happens naturally because race management is Priority Number 1.

Saturday morning...it’s time to get serious!

That said, this event is not just about racing, with four socials scheduled, Thursday thru Sunday evenings, there will be lots of time to meet new sailors, and visit old friends.

The Sylvan Lake Sailing Club (SLSC) is located 15 km west of Red Deer, and is 1½ hrs from both Edmonton & Calgary International Airports.

Our preferred hotels and social venues are all within a three block walk from our marina. Chateau Suites is located on the shore, facing what will be the race course and the Best Western is across the street.

All the information you need will be on the sidebar to the left. Check back often as we will be updating it frequently.

We are excited to host you and your crew, and look forward to an event we will all remember.

Spring Series finishes with perfect racing conditions, and lots of opportunities to make new friends.                       Results

Planet B placed 1st by only half a point and Crantini finished 2nd overall.  Leaving the rest of the RVYC racing fleet wondering why they don't sail a Martin 242!

The spring series is an excellent time to warm up;  Planet B, Crantini and Min of Mine who placed 6th overall,  raced in the PHRF fleet of 16 boats, including our usual friends the 3 Moore 24's and a Pocket Rocket. We made friends on the often small start line with 3 J80's, Melges 24's and a few other nice boats that would have rather not "let us cross".  Racing was wonderfully tight at the mark roundings, and places traded every leg of the course with finishes separated by only seconds. I have a feeling the Martins will have to be pesky with our own kind at the up-coming T.H.R.A.S.H. regatta.

Photos were from Spring Series Day 3 and all snapped thank's to Andrew Madding.  I will post Crantini's photos soon, I have a feeling they are not shown in these photos as they may be ahead...  I would like to think by only a boat length, or two..

Join the 242 Fleet!

Cost: Racing a Martin 242 is some of the best bang for your buck, boat prices are well under $18,000  even including a full new set of sails (+/- $4,000). Top boats only purchase a new jib every year and main every third year and spin when the old one falls apart, however if you go the right way on the racecourse and get a good start, you don't need brand new sails.  There are 13 Martin's in Fleet2 (2 RVYC club owned and available for charter). Moorage is always top of mind when buying a boat, RVicYC is about $170 per month and slips are available, the Martin242 is also an approved one-design boat and thus boats can be dry sailed for the same price.

Racing: Fast, fair and most importantly, very accessible with 7 major one-design regatta's on Vancouver Island alone, great Sunday club racing throught the fall to spring, wednesday nights all summer, plus as many one-design days as the fleet wants to race! This is a fleet that travels, Fleet 1 boats attend many of the Island regattas. Fleet 2 boats love making the trip to Vancouver
(Fleet1) where regattas host 25+ Martin 242's on the line. Fleet 3 sails out of the California Yacht Club where 4 Martin's from BC just attended the North American Championships this past summer! Fleet 4 is sailed out of Sylvan Lake, AB! So there is lots of support for the fleet in the area.

Rules: The Martin242 has strict
onedesign rules keeping all the boats fair and even, fleet measurers are very helpfull with questions and measuring.

Social: Martin 242 sailors are most importantly a very welcoming and encouraging bunch, there is never a shortage of assistance from fellow sailors, boat work, deliveries, crew, tips and tricks for fast sailing... Just ask!  Martin sailors love to get together, if it's beers on the dock after racing or dance party, everyone is always welcome!

Crew: Looking for a boat to race on or just intrested in coming out occasionaly? email martin242fleet2@gmail.com if you would like to receive emails about boats looking for crew.

Crantini has just come up For Sale (see add) not only is she the nicest looking Martin 242 on the RVYC docks, but she has proven to be quite the speedy too!   Crantini won the fleet champs last year at the very competative Cow Bay regatta.
