STARBOARD !

Welcome to the 2009 season.   As always the fleets season kicks off with the TRASH regatta in Victoria on April 18 and 19. This year the event is being organized by the "Ladies of Min". So bring both your "race face" and your party hat!

Great brezze

This season will bring some new competition to the start line and some new faces around the table after racing.

Scott Simmons brought Boomer #109 to Saltspring Island Sailing Club in 2008 and has been getting some good results in club racing this January so Boomer will be well tuned up by spring.

Jason Reid bought Liberte #11 from Tara in 2008. It is great to see Jason getting out for Rvic ATB and Distance racing over the winter.

Blair Luscombe and Brian Huse have brought "Nine" to Victoria from Vancouver. We haven't seen them out this winter, but since neither are strangers to the 242 we can expect them to come on strong when they decide the temperature is right.

Look at that TWIST
MapTown has had a bit of a speed advantage upwind in 15 plus knots the last couple of days of club racing. So I thought I would attempt to document what we have done differently.

I will run through all our settings for the main and jib but the biggest difference seems to come from getting the correct amount of twist in the jib.

The main is set with the outhaul tight, the mainsheet very tight, (as hard as one person can pull) and the traveller all the way down to leeward. Just enough cunningham to stop the sail from flapping.

The jib is set with the halyard about 1 to 1.5 inch more hoist than you would use in 5 knots. The twist is set by moving the jib cars aft. The amount you move the cars aft is based on how the boat drives. If you need to pinch up to keep the boat from over healing then the car needs to come back more. When you have it right you can drive the bottom telltales of the jib fully flying and still keep within 10 - 15 degees of heel. The middle and top telltales are of course luffing. In 12 - 15 knots we often have the car 2 inches aft of our normal light air setting. In 20 or more knots we will be as much as 4 inches aft of normal. The halyard tension also affects the twist greatly so if you need to tension the halyard more to reduce the wrinkles in the luff you will need to move the car furher aft to keep the same amount of twist. So think of your car position and halyard tension as one grouped setting.

I don't really feel this setup produces much more boat speed at any given moment but it makes the boat so much easier to drive without over healing that you spend more time in the sweet spot and you end up with a higher average speed for the beat.

Don't expect to point as high with this setup as you would pinching without any twist in the jib. If you need to point for a few moments pull the traveller up a bit to get some drive from the main while pinching on the jib.

The MapTown crew are far from experts on making a 242 go, so if anyone has a comment or question send it out on the mail list and we will have a discussion. Fleet2@googlegroups.com

Rips 2009 - Saturday Aug 15 to Wed Aug 19

    An even Dozen.

As of Feb 9, we have 12 Martins registered for Rips 2009. 2 from Vancouver, 3 from Sylvan Lake, Alberta and 7 from Vancouver Island.

Should be the best racing of the year!

If you are not registered you had better hurry, there is only space for 4 more boats before RIPS is sold out!

    Register for RIPS here

Because we are spread up and down the Island we really, really need everyone to to at least do their home regatta AND travel to at least ONE other regatta. If other sailors see consistant 242 fleet racing at regattas they will join the fleet, it is as simple as that.
