Thermopylae Regatta 2011     Planet B and King Julian tie for points, Planet B gets the crown!                                   Results

Picture
Thermopylae regatta began this year with an extended Saturday morning dock social, great time to catch up with old friends welcome our new members to the fleet and persuade others to keep racing into the Fall seies. All the local hotshots were represented this regatta making the winner anyone's guess. Both shiny club boats were out after havng been whipped into racing shape, Cookie Monster team of Kate, Justin, Simon and Jamie sailed the blue boat. New RVYC members Tim and his lovely girlfriend Shelley with Eric (of Zoom Zoom) and Jackie on sunday sailed the grey club boat to 3rd place! we look forward to having them back racing again soon.  White Noise threw their hat's into the ring with a special guest, the Commodore of RVYC. Crantini represented 3 boats this year with Ken skippering (Blackaddar) excellent bow and SMS mad texter Robbie (Blackaddar), Paul (Zoom Zoom) and Liane (Crantini).   Min of Mine finally had everyone on the fashion program, Leah, Christine, Nicole and Tara even found a way to laugh as the fleet left them and Cookie Monster to bob in the current at one leeward mark.   King Julian's stunt double was looking fantastic off the dock, and sailed into 2nd place skippered by Fleet2's international man of mystery Blair, he was joined by the "can I pleeease have another mast" King Julian team of Spooner, Chris and Tim.  Planet B Congratulations on the very tough win!  Roger, Louise, Mike and Luke make a great team, and besides the fact that they are a very difficult boat to beat, Planet B is an absolute pleasure to race against and great ambasador of the fleet.

Thermopylae regatta would not be complete without Marion's Roast Beef, Thank-you!     and to create an extra competative atmosphere for 1st place, artist Jill Louise Campbell graciously donated a very coveted painting www.jlcgallery.com
Andrew Madding is the most loved photographer of the Fleet2 Matin24's, all the racing photo's below are thanks to his quick shutter.

Happy Thanksgiving this weekend!   hope the triptofaine wears off  for ATB fall racing begining October 13th.

Maple Bay Regatta good food and good friends!                                              Results

Picture
Congratulations ZoomZoom on the win!

Planet B, Min of Mine and Cookie Monster all towed up to Maple Bay by Two Easy (mothership to Planet B) this was most entertaining as everyone tried to keep the boats at bay. The new team on RVYC's Blue boat team Cookie Monster Kate, Justin, Jamie and Simon nearly put a serious smack down on the fleet placing 2nd. I have a feeling they are just getting started at kicking all of our butts!  Maple Bay is home to Arriba recently moving from Fleet1, it was great to meet the new addition to the fleet and race in their local waters. ZoomZoom also made the trip down from Nanimo making us a 5 boat fleet.
Racing was great this year considering the usual odd conditions of Maple Bay, we missed the lovely line squalls on the way onto the fish farm mark. This regatta was definatly wone at the start and the 3 tacks before the windward (first) mark, as no boat allowed any passing after that!  Maple Bay YC offered great food as usual with breakfast both mornings, and a fantastic steak and salmon BBQ on Saturday night, not to mention music on the lawn and dancing late into the evening.  Huge thank-you to the person that snapped the great photo's, more can be viewed on the
website.

5 Martin242 attending so far.... PlanetB,   Cookie Monster,    Zoom Zoom,    Min of Mine,    Arriba

This is a great way
to end the summer sailing season, always interesting racing conditions, great friends, excellent food and a 50's party!

Blackaddar and Zoom Zoom always make the trip from Naniamo and at least a handfull of Martin's from RVYC including a whipper snipper team on the Blue Club boat, this year we will also welcome a new Martin who has just moved to Maple Bay.

Women and Wind Co-operative regatta with a hint of Martin242 Propaganda

Picture
Lovely warm summer day with a bit of wind, I sure love those few opportunities to sail in a t-shirt! we had 3 Martin242's and a Cal20. Negotiations began minutes before the skippers meeting as crews were created, in the end we had a team of first time martin sailors paired with Min's lovely bow girl, a RVYC club boat sailed by a mother daughter team of 2, and Min sailed by 2 and crewed backwards!  I think the photo's tell the best story of the day!         Post- racing party was enjoyed aboard Min of Mine with sparkling pink wine from Starling Lane, and prizes graciously donated by artist Jill Louise Campbell.

Huge Thank-you  Andrew Madding for the photo's in the slide show.
We were also very lucky to have Brenda snapping artistic photo's up close, I will post these soon.

Jeremy again did a fantastic job of race committee, with the huge assistance of Justin who pulled miles of anchor line and Simon kept score.
 Thank-you

Congratulations Kate and Louise 1st place.

Planet B  sails to the top spot at RIPS 2011    Results

Picture
Wow that was a great week of racing!    Huge Thank-you to the amazing organizers and volunteers who made this event possible.

Below is the newsletter reports for each day.

Day2   was Daisy's turn....   After breaking their mast the team quickly sped off to charter a RVYC martin and return to race the rest of the regatta.    However that left no time to write the newsletter article.

Day3   PLANET B: THE DEMISE OF THE BLACK URBAN DAISY MAST AFTER A BACKSTAY FAILURE The fleet leapt into action. By the time they hit the dock, a club boat from RVICYC laid in waiting, a cigarette boat was commandeered for a quick 50 knot trip to Sidney. They hitched a ride from Sidney to the club. They leapt into the boat and headed onto a long, dark, delivery that they have never done before. Enter Baby Grand and the Martin sailors. The planned BBQ quickly turned into a late night rescue South of Turn Point. With the signalling aid of the solar powered pink flamingo the lost sailors were found, plucked out of the darkness and quickly became the guests of honour on the late night dinner cruise Jeremy successfully navigated the international shipping channels in the dark, dodging 3 freighters and a cruise ship!. The Martin fleet was safely retuned to Browning Harbour at midnight…by the way, Sunday proved to be another day of fantastic close one design racing with 3 different winners in 4 races

Day 4 MIN OF MINE    Ahhh…signals made ashore allowed time for decks and hangovers to dry. As the postponement flag dropped we didn’t have a long delivery to the race course, x marks the targets. Light and shifty conditions kept everyone thinking as positions changed throughout the day. The first race, Daisy headed straight for the bridge and finally settled the score that the sign was in fact 9.5 meters.
Watergirl proved first off the dock equals first over the line by a healthy margin! In the second race, Planet B stubbed their toe on a rock, only giving up a meager boat length. The Pansy Addars (possible new name) went on the attack at the pin end of the finish line and slipped ahead of Watergirl. I was sure the rule was ladies first. White Noise was true definition for race 2, finishing 3
rd. obviously a day at the spa is the best way to recover from a broken boom, repair thanks to Shane. As the AP over H turned to AP over A, the transom x’s still apply and more should be added throughout the fleet. Day 3 was shaping up to be PG13 until Daisy wanted to remind everyone that with the help of Min’s bikini bottoms they too could finish first, we couldn’t help but look. With 2 girls in the top 3, the motto of the day was without a doubt "less sasquatch, more fairy princess". All the girls of Min wish the lovely Judith (an original Min girl and owner of bikini bottoms) a very happy 20th
birthday.

XXOO MIN

Day 5  Watergirl

THE DAY STARTED earlier with Thunderstruck by ACDC, 1 AM to be sure! Then the classic pile on the rabbit took place with Ken Holland on the bottom. After the commotion, the campground was able to shut their eyes for a second nap. We waited again for another thermal race day...during which, we were informed that the infamous nuggets were now marked, so no more keels could be reshaped. Interesting starts and situations on the water…

Lady Van and Aloha kissed hard during the start. It appears, although Alex Foley won a VHF, it did not seem to be that effective as the race committee hoisted and announced the AP flag was flying. It was a great day on the water! Urban Pansy showed that you can drop them into any boat and kick our butts. Watergirl had an UP & down day. From the front to the back and in between. She fouled, she spun and was over early, the race gods were not on her side today. However, what we lost on the water, we won on the dance floor! ;0)

Enjoy your last day on the water @ RIPS!!!

Cow Bay 2011 and Fleet 2 Championship                                                    Results

Picture
The happy crew from Planet B after winning Cow Bay 2011.

We had a fleet of 11 boats vying for the gold ( dacron actually). Day One started out with the typical Doctor filling in as the starts peeled off at 11:30. The first race was very much a tight beat up the beach and reaching back down the shoreline in decent breeze of 10 knots or so. Daisy and Zoom led around the weather mark but Planet B managed to pass on the final beat by staying further off the shore.
The strategy working the shoreline but not going in close continued to work for race 2 and 3. As the wind got lighter it seemed that holes were developing close to the beach which made it risky going too close.  After 3 races the RC spotted a front coming in from the west and decided to squeeze in a 4th race late in the day. Beleive it or not there were some complaints on the radio about "Too much Racing" (not from the 242 fleet though).  Anyway the start gun went off and the fleet got around the course and on the final beat before the front changed the wind from easterly to westerly. Daisy, Zoom and Planet B crawled across the line in a beat. The rest of the fleet came blasting in under kites.

Day Two saw a still strong westerly in the morning with Planet B on 9 points, Daisy on 10 and Blackadder on 11, todays races would decide the event.  The same course was called, but in reverse, definitely shaking up the traditional plan on how to race Cow Bay. In the end it was not all that different, the beat was up the shore and through the anchored boats. The downwind leg saw the fleet split with Daisy picking the shoreline and all the others heading out looking for any breeze the could find. Planet B pulled off a win in the last race and bagged the gold dacron. The Fleet Champs trophy gets to stay at Royal Vic for another year !!

Kudos to Louise, Mike and Luke !! To win in this fleet takes a 100% focus from everyone on board, we certainly had that this weekend!

Great conditions and competition at Kits regatta 2011     Results

Picture
Congratulations to fleet 2's Planet B for placing 4th overall in a fleet of 15, Blackadder and Min of Mine also made the trip accross the Salish Sea to race against Fleet 1 in English Bay.  The wind conditions ranged from  7-12 knots and a fair current was felt throughout most of the day. Every race saw boats headed for the shore, making the start very important and set the fleet up for the always exciting port tack layline, fortunately no bumper boats and Min of Mine  admitted that they closed there eyes a couple of times.   Kits Yacht Club is in competition for the best regatta food and this year was no exception!  it was great to catch up with old friends and we look forward to seeing everyone at Cow Bay regatta.   Now to bug Roger for a nose in the air report from the perspective of 4th.

Very sad news about #304  Trouble

Picture
Fleet2 was sorry to hear that Trouble #304 fell from the craine sunday after racing, fortunatly no one was hurt however the boat  sustained quite a bit of damage, the fall was reported to be the failure of the lifting strap.

We sincerely hope that Trouble can be fixed or is replaced by another Martin, we have always appreciated the effort the team has made to attend some of the Fleet2 events such as Cow Bay, RIPS and SIN, Trouble is the heart of every regatta party and absolutely a top racer at every event they attend.

Hope to see the team out on the race course soon.

Min's photo's from Kits..  (we sure missed Andrew Madding's shots)

Summer SIN Racing in Nanaimo
                                   Results (not yet posted)

NYC's Ken of Blackaddar organized Cutty Sark Regatta this year and I have no doubt all martin's would give him two tillars up. From the minute you hit the dock a Margarita appears in your hand, hot gorgeous weather and music to boot!    and a roll of hot pink duct tape for Min :)

Planet B and Min of Mine towed from RVYC to NYC on Friday meeting before the tide turned to slack at Dood's.

Saturday Racing was tight with 10 Martin's battling up the shore of Newcastle Island, Blackaddar layed a smackdown in the first race and the battle was on.   As was the first use on the duct tape to stop the tiller extension from slipping :)   After racing Martin's stoped in at the Dinghy dock for blended margaritas (we can't quite get enough) and a little post race socializing.

Getting ready Sunday morning behind the protection of Newcastle Island everyone expected a hot sunny light air day; not so. As we rounded the point boats were greeted with huge waves and some serious wind easily in the 25+ steady.  Crew's clipped on the lifejackets and we again pulled out the trusty pink duct tape and taped Nicole's vintage keyhole life jacket around her!    Paul Uliberry must have handed out sick bags to his team and they didn't miss a beat starting the races.  Up-wind was challenging driving in the big waves, again it was a benefit to sail in the tidal back eddies of Newcastle, boats gave each other a bit more room when crossing however mark roundings were still tight and positions changed with every up-wind leg and downwind broach.  Again the trusty pink duct tape came in very handy as Christine taped the inside of the windows from pooring water into the boat.    I didn't realise the Old Spice guy was crewing on an up-wind boat untill we were approachng the windward mark and noticed a log boom at the windward mark, the last 3 boats sqeeked around the mark with feet to spare before the boom took the mark with it!  With the mark retrieved by the harbour patrol we had one last race as the wind moderated and everyone realised how sore and battered they felt. Fortunatly nothing was seriously broken and boats are looking forward to a re-match next weekend at Kits Regatta.

 One Design Regatta                             Results

Re-naming a Martin242 proves good luck as Roger's new "Planet B" takes the top spot!

With perfect wind conditions 6 Martin242's raced 5 tight races in Cadboro Bay this past Saturday. Planet B took the top spot by one point, Crantini was tied for first before the drop, Larry King of the Point was tempted back to the fleet chartering the Blue hulled club boat and placed 3rd after one close tie breaker, Min of Mine will be crying themselves to sleep until a re-match is sailed, Liz from the currently limp King J joined the Min girls for the regatta, we are looking forward to seeing her again for SIN and hope her lovely boat is fixed in time for RIPS. WhiteNoise had a great time and won the race to the cold beer. Unfortunatly the un-intentional sabotage of the J8O hotshot sailors in the Club charter boat worked, as the bottom scum and sucky sails had them returning to the dock for a quick fix mid regatta, making it out for the last race proved they would have been a worthy contender for the top spot. Huge thanks to Jeremy & Amanda (J80 Joyride) and  Larry, Janice and crew (SJ24 Ghostdancer) for joining the Martin fleet for the regatta, we sure hope your rushing out to buy a Martin and join us again!

Huge thanks to Paul Ulibarri and his team who executed the races flawlessly and with such efficiency we couldn't wait to crack a cold one. The after racing party gathered around Roger & Donna's power boat moored on the visitors dock, hopefully this was the first of many parties :) and made for a lovely end to a great day of One Design racing.

Thank-you to Andrew Madding for the always excelent and usually slimming racing photo's!

Next Regatta is SIN in Nanimo!

Congratulations on Maptown's win at THRASH 2011

Friday eased us back into the regatta season with the registration/martin social featuring our dear 3 toed island friends Ken, Robbie and Trevor. Our newest fleet2 members Chris and Spooner made the trip to join us from Vancouver, I am not sure if it was the lure of great Cadboro Bay racing or the anticipated fun to be had staying at Chateau Naomi's that enticed them over :)..

Saturday Racing was a good blow with winds in the steady 20+knot range, two hands were firmly planted of tillers accross the race course and crews moved aft for some great downwind sailing!  Unfortunately King Julian's new mast suffered and they were forced to retire.  Our club Martin242 was skippered by Mike Cannon and crewed by junior racers, and my gosh they sailed that boat like they stole it!  I am sure every boat had at least one good wipe-0ut just to wake up the crew and wash out the cockpit.  Saturday after racing the main lounge was full of racers gobbling up Marion's delicious roast beef. Prizes were handed out to the most deserving carnage survivors thanks to Alex Fox at the Trotac Sailing Shop. Cocktail Mob organized by Naomi McKay played 80's hits and kept racers dancing late into the evening.

Sunday was a much calmer day racing with winds from 5-12.5 knots, Paul Ulliberry had the Martin's racing non-stop in changing heavy current conditions. After racing social was shared aboard Min of Mine. Overall prizes were handed out in the main lounge, and Blackadder drove off into the sunset forgetting their spinniker.

Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and racers who made the regatta happen.

T.H.R.A.S.H. Regatta This Weekend!  April 16th & 17th  RVYC

Picture
Thank Heavens Racing and Spring are Here!

The first big one design regatta of the summer with 8 Martin's expected so far... and we are crossing our fingers for the last 3 to come out and kick butt!   Last year Crantini took the top spot..  any bets for 2011?

Come down to the Yacht Club Friday afternon and help heckle Blackadder as they hoist their mast after a road delivery from Nanaimo.. King Julian gets spalshed for the first time this season and Min, Maptown and White Noise madly jostle for time on the hoist to scrub the winter slime. Friday evening enjoy a cold beer in the Main Lounge with fellow Martin sailors as registration is open - and don't forget to buy a t-shirt!....  I have a feeling it was designed by a Martin sailor....

This weekend expect 2 days of great racing thanks to Paul Ulibarri as PRO. Delicious supper Saturday night with Marion's famous roast beef. THRASH 80's party with live music by the Cocktail Mob thanks to the lead party planner Naomi.  There is no doubt you will want to cut a rug late into the evening! Don't worry because Sunday morning there will be a much needed Starbucks coffee available at the head of the dock thanks to Christine!

Registration and NOR are available online www.rvyc.bc.ca

Lipton Cup

Picture
Crantini was the only Martin hardy enough to race for the coveted Lipton Cup this year.

I watched Crantini slip up the shore and past most of the larger boats off of Esquimalt.  I thought they had it in the bag.  Unfortunatly this wasn't the year. The great distance race had a variety of conditions, with some light anchoring at times and great gusts others.

Raced off the Victoria waterfront against a large fleet of boats from sorunding yacht clubs, this title has not yet been won by a Martin.. Maybe next year!

ATB2   Great day of racing in Cadboro Bay                                                                         Results

4 Martins out racing in a Div2 fleet of 9 boats.  The RVYC club boat was sailed by a great team of hotshots, showing the fleet how it's done with a easy 1st in the first race. Maptown pulled up their socks, sailed the middle of the course and slipped past Crantini and Club Boat for a close win in race 2. Race 3 looked a sure bet to sail up the shore but Maptown again, split for the status quo, and with 3 laps of the coarse finished 1st. Winning the day!

I am sure the fleet is looking forward to the One Design day this sunday, and a rematch next sunday for ATB3, as the fleet tunes up for THRASH regatta.

Spring series begins with 4 martins on the line in Cadboro Bay.                        Results

Picture
The first Sunday of the Spring Series featured sun, calm wind, and hot spiked cider. This helped to encourage 2 more Martins out of their winter hibernation.

Maptown won the day proving that all that winter racing = good results.  Crantini played a great game of Frogger in the very shifty and sometimes non-existant wind ending the day in 2nd place. Woodstock, one of RVYC's Martin242's placed 4th, and little Min of Mine (who couldn't remember port from starboard) placed 6th... Thank god for the hot spiked cider!

The Spring Series is a great time to tune up the boat and crew with only 4 Sunday race days and one one-design race day left before T.H.R.A.S.H regatta on April 16 & 17th.

If you're thinking of coming out and short of crew, don't hesitiate to email the fleet and ask...  or check the rvyc.bc.ca website for crew listings.

Need a boat to race?  RVYC has 2 Martin242's available for charter... and its a great deal!  Drop by the dinghy shed on the foreshore and chat with Steve McBride the Sailing Director.

Crantini wins the RVYC winter series                                    results

Battling crazy windy winter weather Crantini takes the top spot,  and a gold star for participation.                     Congratulations on the win!

New Boats & Members to the fleet..  bit of Gossip

Picture

Hot off the press.. Chris Bligh of the famous "Daisy" will be joining fleet2, expect to see him racing "King Julian" in fleet2 regattas. Welcome Chris, don't wory we will show you the way around the bay :)

This year we welcomed Liz Balderston and her lovely boat "King Julian" to fleet 2, Liz grew up sailing the Gulf Islands and although she currently lives in Kelowna, she decided the racing in Cadboro Bay is way to fun to miss..   and as "King Julian" said "Welcome, giant pansies. Please feel free to bask in my glow of my crown"  seems to be an appropiate name given the "Daisy" folks who have been sailing her....  Conratulations on winning Thermopylae regatta 2010.

"Nine" aka "Star Point"  joined the fleet in 2009, "Nine" was brought over to RVYC from Vancouver by Blair Luscomb, who is reportadly a fantastic sailor, we sure look forward to having him out on the race course. When Blair isn't looking, a new dream team of Star boys have been absconding with the boat and doing some serious shaking up of fleet2's previous pecking order!

Mark "Rukus" is the Fleet Captain for 2010

Picture
2010 Fleet 2 AGM.   After many years of hard work Roger Nelson passed the crown to Mark Spence as our new Fleet Captain, Al Carley is our new Treasurer, Ken Holland carries on as the Measurer and Tara Smith is once again the self appointed entertainment and fashion cordinator.  With the potential addition of a new dry sailed Martin joining the fleet we debated and agreed to allow dry sailed Martins in our fleet. Single point lifts were another hot topic. Roger, having done lots of background work on this, provided the fleet with an engineer and club approved solution to safely allow us to continue to hoist the boats. We discussed upcoming events including the spring one design race day, which will be tried for the first time. Kirk and Al gave Tara a lovely bottle of Moet pink champagne (pictured) as thanks for the use of her trailer etc.. looking forward to sharing it!
